Can not load the game - CtD, Crash right after Starforce check Options

I am desperate......

Bought the game.
Installed it.
Started the game.

Got through the Starforce check.
But then a crash to desktop.......

Installed the patch, but with the exact same result.


The game crashes every time right after Starforce. It seems as if the Starforce check finishes, the screen goes black, I get to see two small wheels turning for perhaps half a second, then the crash occurs.

"ufo.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I have been through the forum, but can't find a solution.
Have already tried:

Stopping all other progs.
Reinstalling the game.
Installing Omega drivers in stead of the Catalyst 5.11.
Reinstalling Directx9.0c
Starting in safe mode (same result).
Starting in windowed mode (same result).


No problems with other games on my system.....


Specs:
Motherboard: Asrock Dual SATA-2
CPU: Athlon64 3800+ Venice e6
Mem: 1GB
Windows XP with sp2
GFX: x800 gto2 - 540/600, catalyst5.11
3.1 GB free on drive with the game. 1.3 GB free on system drive.

Any one with similar problems?
Any one with a solution/suggestion?
