The amount of spam bots on these forums lately suggests that there needs to be more security measures on the register page.

Now, I'm no expert in php scripting, but there has to be another way in avoiding these automated b*st*rds then a current scheme.

If I ever get rich I'll donate parts of my fortune to hunting down spammers... wink.gif

lynx are looking at ways to lessen the problem, so hopefully it will be better soon.

For one the forum should be upgraded to the latest version.

More like the server won't handle it. IPB is a bloated piece of software. PHPBB beats it every day.

I think MyBB would also be a good candidate for the new forum software. There's even a converter available to make the transition from IPB easier.

MyBB is very easy to customize via flexible template and plugin systems. For example, to install a new plugin, you'll just upload one file to the plugins directory, then activate and configure it via the admin view and that's it. No need to modify the source codes directly.

PHPBB3 is proberly going to be a better choice since they have been going longer. Its also proberly the most popular free board. PHPBB3 has AutoMod where you upload the mod to a directory, goto the admin panel and hit install. It then applys the mod to the forum(You can also get it to uninstall them). Its also got converters for IPB to PHPBB.

I agree, PHPBB3 is probably your best choice. Its what I use right now on my own forum.

Hopefully from now on, there should be alot less of them breaking through the defences. The main problem was that IPB protected the majority of the forums files (So you can't modify them), but index.php isn't protected, so with a little hack it should now have better protection against bots. Only time will tell how effective it is.
